Fireworks turned my neighborhood into something that sounded like a war zone, or so it seemed this Fourth of July — and the days leading up to it.
The state and city made more kinds of fireworks available.
And the fireworks also produced the typical bad air — enough to push the community over the top of the daily fine particle standard on Sunday, and near it on Monday.
This isn’t the first time. Independence Day topped the fine particle standard in 2004, 2005 and 2006 — then again in 2007 and 201o.
The Louisville Metro Air Pollution Control District tried to get the EPA to not hold levels in 2004, 2005 and 2006 against the city agency. EPA only agreed to that for 2006.
It’s too soon to say whether the air district will ask for a pass for Sunday’s high readings, which are factored into a formula determining whether the region violates the standard.
